Feature and Follow #214: And the Answer is...

It's time for Feature and Follow Friday! Don't forget to checkout the featured bloggers on Alison Can Read and Parajunkee.com.

This week's question: Suggest a question! We need questions of the week for future FFs. Any ideas?

I'm loving this challenge! Here's are some of my favorite icebreaker questions.

  • Tell two lies and one truth about yourself. Guess which ones are the lies and which is the truth in Comments!
  • It's a very hot and muggy day. You desperately want something very cool and refreshing to quench your thirst and revitalize your body. What would you drink -- either make your own or store-bought. If you are making your own, please share the recipe!
  • You were just given a yacht. What would you name it? And why?
  • If you were to get a tattoo, what would it say or what would the graphic be? Or if you have a tattoo, share a picture and its meaning.
  • When you were in grade school, what did you want to be when you grew up? Why?
  • If you had one extra hour of free time a day, and if reading was not an option, how would you use it and why?
  • Have you ever had a reoccurring dream? What was it?
  • If you had a theme song, what would it be and why? Share a YouTube clip!
  • What title (like "Most Likely to Succeed") did you get (or would you get) from your classmates?

What are some of your favorite icebreaker questions? How would you respond to any of the questions above?

Feature and Follow #213-30: Follow the Leader

It's time for Feature and Follow Friday! Don't forget to checkout the featured bloggers on Alison Can Read and Parajunkee.com.

This week's question: Social Share! What is your favorite social network and leave us a link so we can join you!

I'm a fan of Facebook and Twitter. I like to use HootSuite to schedule my FB posts and tweets. I do read FB more often than Twitter. I'm not sure why, but perhaps it is ability to have longer statuses and I find it easier to view pictures people share.

What's your favorite social network?

Feature and Follow #212-29: Where I'm From

Thanks for dropping by Second Run Reviews. If it is still Friday, August 1, I invite you to help me celebrate my birthday by hopping over to my One-Day Only Birthday Giveaway!

This week's question: What is the biggest city you live near (or interesting landmark)? Show us a postcard picture.

I live near Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the city of five seasons. What is the fifth season, you ask? According to the Cedar Rapids web site: "This fifth season affords us time to enjoy all other seasons, and to enjoy life." We affectionally call Cedar Rapids, the city of five smells. There are lots of plants downtown (or near downtown) that produce a varying number of smells. Some are nasty like ADM, a corn processing plant. Some are amazing like the days Quaker is making Crunchberries or General Mills is making fruit roll ups or Pop Secret Popcorn. YUMMY!

I love living near Cedar Rapids. There's a few book stores, an amazing library system, awesome coffee shops and a cute little wine bar near my home. The people here are very much like where I grew up in Minnesota. I just don't have to drive 45 minutes to get to a Starbucks or Barnes & Noble.

Where do you live? Share one fun fact about the area you live in!

Feature and Follow #211-28: The Constant

It's time for Feature and Follow Friday! Don't forget to checkout the featured bloggers on Alison Can Read and Parajunkee.com.

This week's question: What is your favorite tv series that you can watch over and over again on Netflix?

You know what I'm not much of a television re-watcher. The one series I do jump back to a bit from time to time is Lost. I was obsessed with that show when it was on. I watched it religiously and analyzed the heck out of it with my friends. I listened to podcasts. Read tons of articles online. Devoured Doc Jensen (Entertainment Weekly) articles for clues about what the heck was going on. The show is amazing to me. It's kind of fun to go back and watch some of the first episodes when Jack of God and Sawyer was a dick.

My favorite episode is probably "The Constant." So much so that when I had a print made for my husband to celebrate out anniversary I put the phrase, "You are my constant." on it.

How about you? What show do you love to rematch?

Feature and Follow #210-27: Get Your YouTube Laughs On

It's time for Feature and Follow Friday! Don't forget to checkout the featured bloggers on Alison Can Read and Parajunkee.com.

This week's question: Post a funny Youtube video (doesn’t have to be book related).

I am a huge fan of Frozen. The movie came out in November, but I didn't see it until the end of February. As a result, I got sucked into the many parodies out there and fell in love with them as well. It's just a reminder that it is good to have a sense of humor about the stuff you love. Of these three, I'm not sure which is my favorite. But I will tell you the my sister-in-law got a kick out of "Will You Help Me Hide a Body?" and it is now her ringtone on my iPhone.

Feature and Follow #209-26: Happy Father's Day

It's time for Feature and Follow Friday! Don't forget to checkout the featured bloggers on Alison Can Read and Parajunkee.com.

This week's question: If you had a time machine (i.e. a TARDIS), where would you go?

I hope I don't bring the whole crowd down, but I would travel back to the evening of January 23, 2001. I worked in college admissions at the time and spent a lot of my evenings on the phone calling students asking them about their college plans. I got done early on the 23rd and for a fleeting moment, I thought, I should call my parents and decided against it. My dad was killed in a car accident on January 24, 2001. I would like just 30 seconds on the phone with him to say, I love you, Dad.

Feature and Follow #208-25: My Favorite Children's Books

It's time for Feature and Follow Friday! Don't forget to checkout the featured bloggers on Alison Can Read and Parajunkee.com.

This week's question: What are some of your favorite picture books - either current ones or ones from your childhood?

I consider myself pretty lucky. Although my life I've been encouraged to read. I can remember that most of my early childhood and elementary school teachers read to our classes or had those fancy books with cassette tapes that beeped when the pages needed to be turned. As a result, it was difficult for me to narrow down this list. I probably could list at least 20 Children's books that I adore!

The Story of Ferdinand
by Munro Leaf, Robert Lawson (Illustrator)
I love the illustrations in this book. Lawson captures the personality of Ferdinand to well in drawings.

Make Way for Ducklings
by Robert McCloskey
I vividly remember this book being read to me in elementary school. Every time I see a family of ducks, I think of this story.

The Monster at the End of this Book
by Jon Stone, Michael J. Smollin (Illustrator)
When reading this book to children, you MUST interact with the book and act out the story. If it says the page is bricked up, you better make it look like that when you turn the page!

Miss Nelson Is Missing!
(Miss Nelson #1)
by Harry Allard, James Marshall (Illustrator)
Every child's dream--the teacher is missing! But beware the substitute, she's no pushover.

"There Are Rocks in My Socks!" Said the Ox to the Fox
by Patricia Thomas, Mordicai Gerstein (Illustrator)
You thought Dr. Suess liked rhymes? This book is full of them. Tongue-twisting rights involving rocks and socks and "oxes" and foxes!

BONUS! A Children's Book I Used to Love and Now I Loathe
I first heard Love You Forever in college. It was read during a church service on Mother's Day. I was away from home and near tears when the Pastor read it. Flashforward several years and my niece crawls up into my lap with Love You Forever and I am forced to read the book at least 5 if not 6 times in a row. After about the third time, I look over at my sister and say, Does this mother seem a bit stalkerish to you? And now I can't read that that book without trying to hold back giggles and thinking someone should call the cops about an old woman crawling in the window to rock her adult son while he sleeps.

What are some of your favorite children's books? Is there a book you used to love and now you loathe?

Feature and Follow #207-24: Feeding My Caffeine Addiction

It's time for Feature and Follow Friday! Don't forget to checkout the featured bloggers on Alison Can Read and Parajunkee.com.

This week's question: The Best Books of 2014 (so far) with my favorite mugs of coffee.

I love coffee. I love Audrey Hepburn. I love Breakfast at Tiffany's. I bought a french press a year ago just so I could make my own iced coffee during the summer months. The baristas at the local Starbucks know my favorite drink. I have a Starbucks gold card. My favorite spot to sip the a lovely cup of joe? Wit's End which sits just off main street in my town. I could sit there for hours drinking and reading or chatting with my friends. It's certainly a location I think Holly Golightly would have stopped by in the early hours of the morning while before heading back to her apartment to sleep off the evening and snuggle with Cat.

Feature and Follow #206-23: Best Books with My Coffee

It's time for Feature and Follow Friday! Don't forget to checkout the featured bloggers on Alison Can Read and Parajunkee.com.

This week's question: The Best Books of 2014 (so far) with my favorite mugs of coffee.

I work on my FF posts on Saturday mornings so I was a tad confused when Alison had a different question than Parajunkee so I'm combining both questions. Enjoy!

My Most Favorite Books of 2014
(So Far)
  • Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell. I didn't write a review for this one. There was enough buzz and love out there, but I did love it.
  • Ashen Winter and Sunrise by Mike Mullin. This series is heart wrenchingly realistic for a girl living in Iowa. Read my series review.
  • Fury by Charlotte McConaghy. Read my review.

Feature and Follow #205-22: She's Got a Ticket to Ride...

It's time for Feature and Follow Friday! Don't forget to checkout the featured bloggers on Alison Can Read and Parajunkee.com.

This week's question: Armchair Travel! Tell us about your favorite REAL LIFE book in a setting you’d like to visit.

Paris. Oh, the City of Lights, you call my name. I'm not quite certain when I first fell in love you with. Perhaps it was when I watched Forget Paris all those years ago or maybe it was when I was reading some long forgotten book. I dream of wandering through your streets, drinking fine French wine. I dream of whiling away the hours in some obscure cafe, sipping coffee and eating a croissant while reading a book and watching people stroll by my table. Oh, the days I could spend in Paris. I am saving my dollars, pennies and nickels, Paris. Four years from now, the year I turn forty, my dream will be realized (with or without my husband in tow). I'm quite certain that just like New York City and London, once I visit, my heart will be belong to you and I will long for the chance to wander your streets again. I will never be able to Forget Paris.

How about you? What real life book location calls your name?

Feature and Follow #203-20: I'll have a side of middling character development, please.

It's time for Feature and Follow Friday! Don't forget to checkout the featured bloggers on Alison Can Read and Parajunkee.com.

This week's question: How important is good writing to you? In an ideal world, a book would be beautifully written AND have great character development, plot, etc. But in the real world, which do you prefer: (1) Great characters and plot with lousy writing or (2) Middling character development and plot but gorgeous writing?

Oh, boy, this one is a tough one. I prefer middling character development with gorgeous writing. Why? Well, let's look at the definitions of gorgeous and middling, shall we?

gor·geous [gawr-juhs]
adjective
1. splendid or sumptuous in appearance, coloring, etc.; magnificent: a gorgeous gown; a gorgeous sunset.
2. Informal. extremely good, enjoyable, or pleasant: I had a gorgeous time.
Synonyms
1. rich, superb, grand; brilliant, resplendent, glittering, dazzling. See magnificent.
Antonyms
1. poor, plain.
Dictionary.com Unabridged. Random House, Inc. 28 May. 2014.
mid·dling [mid-ling] adjective
1. medium, moderate, or average in size, quantity, or quality: The returns on such a large investment may be only middling.
2. mediocre; ordinary; commonplace; pedestrian: The restaurant's entrées are no better than middling.
3. Older Use. in fairly good health.
Dictionary.com Unabridged. Random House, Inc. 28 May. 2014.

Looking back at the books I read in the last few years as I have really starting keeping track, I would say that most of them have middling character development as I have very few five star reviews records in GoodReads. Perhaps for me five stars are reserved for the beautifully written novels with superb character development. What keeps me engaged in a story is rich writing. The author giving me just enough to turn the next page and follow the carefully plotted breadcrumbs so I come to the same conclusion as my favorite character(s) at the very same moment so I can share that experience with them.

And perhaps, for me, middling characters are more relatable. Middling characters are me, my friends and my family. I can see myself in Middle Earth or Westeros or Narnia struggling along side Frodo and Arya and Lucy for all that is right in the world. Middling characters have room to grow after the story is done. They are not quite perfect. Middling characters have potential to perform extraordinary deeds as deemed necessary by the plot, but in the end, they are ordinary just like me. And it my admiration of their deeds that makes them resplendent and raises them to intrepid heroes (or brilliant villains*) in my mind's eye.

This, of course, is all subjective and in the eye of the beholder. What I view a gorgeous writing another person may see as lousy writing. What another views as great characters, I may see as middling. As bloggers, our responsibility is to define and explain what it is about a book that makes us connect (or not connect). It's more than "I didn't like it." or "I loved it." It's all about the why. And as consumers and active participants in the Internet Culture, we have to open our minds and be accepting of those differences. It's tough sometimes, but an open dialogue about our likes and dislikes brings us a greater understanding of ourselves and each other. In the end, I believe, that the true purpose of reading. To discover what's inside ourselves and others, grasp that understanding and then having the ability to go out into the world and shout out our discoveries from the mountaintops.

How about you? Which do you prefer?

*Amy in Gone Girl, anyone? How about Voldemort/Tom Riddle in Harry Potter?

Feature and Follow #202-19: Have you met my friend Ted?

It's time for Feature and Follow Friday! Don't forget to checkout the featured bloggers on Alison Can Read and Parajunkee.com.

This week's question: Have you ever persuaded someone to read a book, a series, or a whole genre? What book(s) and who was it? Did they like it?

This is my sister. Everyone say, HI! (Oh, and feel free to Oo and Ah over my adorable nephew.)
A few years ago I began passing along some of my favorite reads to my sister. It started with Outlander by Diana Gabaldon. And then just about any physical book I read that I liked, I passed along to her. It was like hand-me-downs, but with books instead of clothes. She's liked many of them as GoodReads can attest! Have you ever seen this feature of GoodReads? It shows just how many books we have in common. It comes from years of sharing my books with her.

Over the years, she's come to love fairy tale retellings. Check out her reaction to the final book in The Princess series by Jim C. Hines and Jim's response.

Just wait till she reads The Lunar Chronicles, right?!

But, honestly, for me as a sister, as an avid reader and new blogger, my proudest moment was when I received the following comment from her when she was finished reading the Ashfall series by Mike Mullin.

And this past weekend, while browsing through the book sale at the local library, instead of picking out books for myself, I was picking out books for my sister and throwing them on her pile. She is excited to read some books before I do and pass them along to me. Maybe someday I can persuade her to my co-blogger.

Thank you, sis, for allowing me to rekindle your love of books and helping you to discover your passion for survivalist fiction. And seriously, co-blogger? Think about it!

So how about you, have you every introduced someone to their next favorite book/genre?

This week's question: What living author or authors would you like to have dinner with?

Well, I've had drinks with Jade Eby, Jim C. Hines, Jed Q. Peterson, Michael Koogler, and Dennis W. Green. Who's left? Well, for me that would be James A. Owen and Diana Gabaldon. Although any chance I get to be near one of the authors I've read or plan to read is an amazing experience. I still get a tad over excited when I see Jim at ICON.
