A Note from the Director: Cruising with the Winchesters

I love music. Specifically, I love soundtracks and cast recordings. Growing up I can recall watching the episode of Head of the Class where they performed Grease and then finding the Original Cast Recording of Grease in my mother's cassette collection and listening to that over and over. My sister and I would stage performances of Grease outside on this huge mound of dirt that was in our backyard after they dug the foundation for the house my parents built on our farm circa 1986. I'm sure it was quite the sight to behold as back then we had NO clue what Grease was about, but that music was awesome.

As I got older and went to movies with my high school sweetheart, I was tuned into the music. I used to be able to identify the greats like Hans Zimmer, Michael Kamen and John Williams within seconds of a movie starting. It wasn't unusual for me to immediately go out and by the soundtrack for a movie shortly after seeing it. And in turn, listen to it non-stop for hours on end. I used to prep for my dramatic duo piece about the Holocaust before performing it in a speech competition by listening to the haunting violin theme from Schindler's List. (It was the last track on side one of the cassette.)

As time went on, I started really listening to the music that started showing up in some of my favorite television shows. It wasn't stuff I heard on the radio and conveniently enough soundtracks were issued for some of my favorite shows like Grey's Anatomy, Scrubs, House and Bones. Recently, as many of my readers know, I have started watching Supernatural. My good friend, Erin, also loves Supernatural. She has been a long time fan and often laughs when I make some offhanded remark about the Winchester boys because she knows where the show has been and I don't. I've discovered that there's some great music in that show. Dean definitely knows his classic rock. Erin has also noticed the excellent tunes and while there is an official Supernatural soundtrack, Erin created her own and passed the playlist on to me. There's actually a Volume I and II right now.

You see, for me, music, like books, creates this spark in me. It draws me into a scene, a memory, a feeling. There are songs that make me choke up, or roll the windows down in my car for my own personal car concert or dance around the room at home. It's visceral. I love that thrill of knowing all the words to a song and letting the notes wash over me and understanding exactly what the musician is feeling as he/she sings and/or plays a song. It's magic.

Now, sometimes the commercially produced soundtracks capture that emotion and sometimes they are a let down. How could a Supernatural soundtrack not include "Carry On My Wayward Son" or at least one song by Led Zeppelin? So Erin scoured the Supernatural Wiki and created the following playlists.

You know what's awesome about these playlists? They are perfect for summer driving. I've been cruising around town blasting this from my little black Honda, windows rolled down, sunroof open and laughing that my car wouldn't be cool enough for Dean to step foot near. Now all I need is a bumper sticker that says, "Hunting with the Winchester Boys" and all would be right with the world.

How about you? Do you have your own favorite soundtrack(s) or playlist(s) for your favorite television show, movie or book(s)?

20 of 24 correct.

I did pretty well this year. Perhaps the best I've ever done. I did so well that I won a $20 gift card to Collins Road Theatres. Does this make me an Oscar winner too?

The Sunday Post: Special Oscars Edition

PTonight is the Oscars. I am so excited that every time I see something related to the Oscars on TV, I squeal, THE OSCARS ARE TONIGHT! I'm pretty sure my husband and my cats are ready to for that be over with soon.

So here's a rundown of the Oscar nominated flicks I was able to see before the Big Dance.

This is probably the best I've done with seeing the nominees in recent years. Due to the public and critical acclaim of many of the films, our local second run theater has been blessed with getting many of the films in before the Oscars actually air. The last movie I'll see before the show airs tonight is Gravity. I didn't get to The Wolf of Wall Street, but I have a personal day tomorrow so I'll be treating myself. Tonight I'll be joining other local movie fans at Collins Road Theatre for their annual FREE Oscars bash which starts at 6 PM. Maybe I'll see you there!

My Oscar Picks

  • Picture: 12 Years a Slave
    • While not my favorite flick, it will win tonight. If I had my druthers, I would like to see Her take this prize.
  • Actor: Matthew McConaughey
  • Actress: Cate Blanchett
    • I'm actually bit torn on this pick. I wouldn't mind seeing Dame Judy Dench win for Philomena.
  • Supporting Actor: Jared Leto
  • Supporting Actress: Lupita Nyong'o
  • Animated Feature: Frozen
  • Cinematography: Gravity
  • Costume Design: American Hustle
  • Director: Alfonso Cuaron
  • Documentary Feature: The Act of Killing
  • Documentary Short Subject: The Lady in Number 6: Music Save my Life
  • Film Editing: Gravity
  • Foreign Language Film: The Great Beauty
  • Makeup and Hairstyling: Dallas Buyers Club
  • Music-Original Score: Gravity
  • Music-Original Song: "Let It Go" from Frozen
  • Production Design: The Great Gatsby
  • Short Film-Animated: Get a Horse!
  • Short Film-Live Action: Aquel No Era Yo (That Wasn't Me)
  • Sound Editing: Gravity
  • Sound Mixing: Gravity
  • Visual Effects: Gravity
  • Writing-Adapted Screenplay: 12 Years a Slave
  • Writing-Original Screenplay: Her
    • I certainly hope Her wins this category. I can't stop gushing about this movie and the beautiful prose. There are lines from the movies that still stick with me and I saw it just about a month ago!

"It's like I'm reading a book... and it's a book I deeply love. But I'm reading it slowly now. So the words are really far apart and the spaces between the words are almost infinite. I can still feel you... and the words of our story... but it's in this endless space between the words that I'm finding myself now. It's a place that's not of the physical world. It's where everything else is that I didn't even know existed. I love you so much. But this is where I am now. And this who I am now. And I need you to let me go. As much as I want to, I can't live your book any more." Samantha (Her)
Share your Oscar picks in comments. Which Oscar nominees have you seen? Which one got your Thumbs Up and which ones got a Thumbs Down? Will you be singing along with "Let It Go" tonight?

A Note from the Director: My Super Bowl is not your Super Bowl

That's right. I said it. I don't care about the Broncos and the Seahawks. I won't even be tuning in to watch the commercials. Tonight at about 10 to 8, I'll be making tea, snuggling up with the kitty-babies and tuning into PBS to watch Sherlock insult Watson and the Dowager Countess insult everyone. My Super Bowl is a month away and I have a lot of prep to do.

I am a huge movie buff and this is my favorite time of year. I relish being able to go to the movie theatre almost every weekend and get lost in the dark. Next to the smell of fresh brewed coffee mixed with the smell of new books, watching a movie is one of my favorite experiences.

And I don't mind waiting. It's become kind of a challenge for me to see how many nominated movies I can see before the Oscars and then making my picks. I'm not very good at picks. I ignore the critics and vote with my heart. What movie made me laugh or cry or look at the world in a different way? Those are the movies that should win. Sometimes a box office hit and the really emotional movies cross paths and an Oscar is won for one if my picks. But that doesn't happen often.

Over the next few weeks, as I venture out to my favorite locally owned independent theatre, I'll be keeping you up to date on what nominated flicks I've seen and what I want to win. By the time, Oscar Sunday rolls around, I'll post my picks and we can compare as they announce the winners.

So I hope your pick wins tonight and that all the commercials are amazing. I'll be hunkering down like an old woman watching PBS and counting the days to my Super Bowl Sunday. Cheers!
